Bull riders may tout the so-called “sport” of bull riding as a harmless form of entertainment, but the fact is that the animals pay a high price during these events. Bulls are tormented in the chutes prior to their release into the ring. They are forced to wear bucking straps, and the riders use spurs, which dig into the animals’ flesh. Bucking straps are painful – they are cinched tightly around the animals’ genitals or abdomens, making the bulls buck to try and shake off the straps. Bulls buck violently and beyond their normal ability because the straps and ropes are cinched so tightly around their abdomens. The straps often cause injuries – such as paralysis or fractured spines and necks – leading to death.
Animals who are used in rodeos are considered cheap and expendable. They are used time and again before their bruised and battered bodies end up at the abattoir.
There is nothing entertaining about a “sport” in which animals pay with their lives. Please do not attend the upcoming World Cup bull-riding event in Brisbane, and please boycott all other rodeos.

IMOGEN BAILEY TO BULLRIDERS: NO ONE LIKES AN EIGHT-SECOND RIDE
Australia’s Sexiest Woman Stars in PETA Asia-Pacific Ad Protesting Cruel World Cup Bullriding
Sydney – Wearing a sexy black dress and perched seductively on bales of straw under the tagline “No One Likes an Eight-Second Ride”, supermodel, actor and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Asia-Pacific pal Imogen Bailey stars in a new ad condemning the upcoming World Cup bullriding event on the Gold Coast. |
Why are Bailey and PETA bucking bullriding? Bulls are often tormented in the chutes prior to their release in order to rile them into a frenzy. Bucking straps are cinched tightly around their sensitive groin areas, and riders dig spurs into the animals’ flesh, causing additional pain. Bulls buck beyond their normal ability in an attempt to rid themselves of the straps. Strained tendons and ligaments and torn muscles are common, and many animals die or are euthanised after suffering broken bones.
“This isn’t the first time Bailey has teamed up with PETA Asia-Pacific and its international affiliates to fight animal abuse”. She cuddled with a rabbit for PETA Asia-Pacific’s “Hands Off the Buns” anti-fur ad, appeared naked in an ad protesting the beating of baby elephants in Thailand and showed up au naturel in front of Buckingham Palace with the message “Bare Skin, Not Bear Skin” to protest the ceremonial caps worn by The Queen’s Guards. For her outstanding dedication to helping to stop animal suffering, Imogen was presented with PETA USA’s 2005 International Humanitarian Award.
“There’s nothing brave or heroic about animal abuse, and that’s all bullriding is”, says Bailey. “Whether you’re sitting on the bull’s back or sponsoring someone else to do it, the one sure thing about bullriding is that animals will suffer and die.”
